How We Train — The FUNino Way
At this age, fun and learning are the same thing. FUNino is the game format created by German-born game intelligence pioneer Horst Wein that puts every child in the game, every minute — with maximum ball contact and real match situations from day one.
FUNino replaces large-group drills with small-sided games specifically designed for young players. Field size, goal size, number of players, and rules are all adapted to the age and skill level of the children — so every game feels just right.
Instead of standing in line waiting for a turn, every child is always involved — touching the ball, making decisions, scoring goals. This is how German youth soccer develops players who love the game for life.
At ages 5–9 the brain learns through play. FUNino sessions look like games — because they are. Skills are picked up naturally, without children even realising they’re being coached.
Multiple small goals spread across the playing area encourage movement in all directions, 1v1 situations, and quick decision-making — the foundation of every great player.

In Memory of Horst Wein
1928 – February 14, 2016
Every FUNino session we run traces back to one man: Horst Wein, born in Hannover, Germany, who spent the second half of his life in Barcelona, where he is survived by his two sons. He passed away on February 14, 2016 — remembered by friends across football, hockey, and beyond.
Wein’s path to youth soccer was anything but conventional. He first made his mark in field hockey — as a German international player, and later as the coach who led Spain to its first-ever European title and an Olympic silver medal. He became the first coach ever awarded the title of FIH Master Coach, and in 1975 was the first coach ever appointed to lead a European representative team against Asia. His book, “The Science of Hockey,” remains the best-selling hockey book ever published.
Encouraged by FC Barcelona to bring his game intelligence approach to football, Wein went on to consult for many of Europe’s top clubs and international federations. His lasting legacy is “Fútbol a la Medida del Niño” — his age-appropriate development model, which became Spain’s official youth coaching textbook for more than two decades. Above all, he’ll be remembered for one simple conviction: that coaching should be built around the child, not the other way around.
Why it matters here: every FUNino session at Soccer for Beginners is a small continuation of Wein’s life’s work — maximum ball contact, real game situations, and a coaching philosophy built entirely around what a child actually needs at their age, not what’s convenient to teach.
