Rec, Travel, or Competitive?

Charleston has options at every level — the trick is matching your player’s age and goals to the right one, not the most prestigious one.

🌱

Recreational League

Best for ages 4–8. Local YMCA and community leagues prioritize fun and touches on the ball over results. Programs like Soccer Shots Charleston and TM17pro’s own Soccer for Beginners (ages 5–9) are good entry points. This is where love of the game gets built — don’t skip it for early “competitive” placement.

🚐

Travel / Club Soccer

Typically starts age 9–10 (U9/U10). Weekend tournaments, regional travel, real coaching structure. Clubs like Charleston United (CUSC) and NOSA Football Club run strong programs at this level without the premier price tag.

🏆

Premier / ECNL

Ages 12+, for players who’ve shown both skill and appetite for the commitment. South Carolina Surf and James Island Youth SC (whose competitive arm fields MLS NEXT and Girls Academy Aspire teams) compete at this tier. Heavy time and travel commitment — make sure your player wants this, not just you.

What to Look For in a Club

Not every club with a nice website delivers good coaching. A few questions cut through the marketing fast.

1

Ask about coaching licenses. USSF or UEFA-licensed coaches have gone through real coach education — not just a background check. It’s fair to ask a club directly what license their coaches hold.

2

A former pro playing career isn’t the credential parents think it is. Playing at a high level and teaching a 9-year-old the fundamentals are different skills — some of the best youth developers never played professionally, while some ex-pros struggle to break technique down for beginners. A license and a teaching track record say more than a playing bio.

3

Watch a training session before you commit. Is every kid touching the ball constantly, or standing in lines waiting a turn? Session structure tells you more than the club’s win record.

4

Ask about team size and player-to-coach ratio. A 20-kid team with one coach means less individual feedback. Smaller groups develop technique faster, especially before age 12.

5

Check the actual travel commitment. Charleston’s bridges and Highway 17 corridor make a “30 minute” facility a very different reality at 5:30pm. Ask for a realistic season schedule before tryouts, not after.

Age-By-Age

What’s Appropriate, By Age

A rough guide — every player develops differently, but this keeps expectations realistic.

U6–U8
Ages 4–8

Rec league only. Small-sided games, no standings that matter, maximum touches. Skip travel soccer entirely at this age.

U9–U10
Ages 9–10

Good window to try travel soccer if your player is asking for more. First real tactical concepts introduced.

U11–U13
Ages 11–13

Skill gaps between players become visible. Technical training outside of team practice starts to matter more.

U14+
Ages 14–16

Serious players choose ECNL/Premier if pursuing college soccer. This is also when club fit and playing time matter most for scholarship visibility.

Local Knowledge

Charleston-Specific Things to Know

☀️

Lowcountry heat and humidity are real. Charleston summer tryouts and camps run in serious heat. Confirm water breaks are built into the schedule and send players in with a full bottle, not a half one.

📅

Tryout timing varies by club — check early. Charleston United (CUSC) typically holds tryouts in May for the fall season, while the Charleston Battery’s academy tryout runs each January. Some clubs, like SC Surf, haven’t announced exact dates for the upcoming season yet — don’t wait until the last minute to check.

🚦

Location matters more than club prestige. A slightly less “elite” club 15 minutes away often serves a family better long-term than a top club that means crossing multiple bridges every practice night across the Charleston area.

🏟️

Use the Charleston Battery as a motivator, not a plan. Their USL academy pathway is real but small. Watching a match at Patriots Point is a great way to build love for the game — just don’t build the whole plan around an academy invite.

Budgeting

What It Actually Costs

Ranges vary by club, but here’s roughly what Charleston families should budget per season, all-in (registration, uniform, tournament fees).

Recreational

Low

YMCA and county rec leagues. The most affordable entry point, usually including a jersey and a short season.

Travel / Club

Moderate

Add tournament travel, uniforms, and facility fees on top of club dues. Ask for the full season cost up front, not just monthly dues.

Premier / ECNL

Highest

National travel, showcase events, and top-tier coaching staff. Some clubs offer scholarships — always ask, it’s more common than families expect.
